Solar Panel Installation Across The Lake District

The Lake District might not be the first place people associate with solar energy, but for homeowners and holiday let owners across the region, it’s one of the most effective investments available. The UK has more than sufficient solar resource year-round for panels to pay back well, and properties across the Lake District, with largely unobstructed skies and a good proportion of south- and south-west-facing rooftops, are well suited to solar.

At Thomson Energy Solutions, we install solar panels across the Lake District and the wider Cumbria region. We’re MCS-accredited, with over 5 years of experience and more than 100 installations completed. We work with homeowners, holiday let owners, and B&B operators from Keswick in the north down to Windermere and Coniston in the south. Every system is designed around your specific property — roof orientation, pitch, shading, and energy usage — rather than a generic package.

Why Solar Makes Sense in the Lake District

01.

Solar panels generate electricity from daylight — not just direct sunshine — meaning they perform well across the UK year-round, including in the Lake District. Energy you generate and use yourself is energy you don’t buy from your supplier, and with electricity prices having risen sharply in recent years, that saving is more significant than ever. Most systems pay back within 5-10 years, with panels lasting 25 years or more.

02.

Any electricity your panels generate that you don’t use yourself can be exported to the grid under the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG). Your energy supplier pays you a rate per kilowatt-hour for that export — and to access it, your installer must be MCS accredited. We handle the MCS registration as part of every installation.

03.

Energy is one of the biggest overheads for Lake District holiday let and B&B owners. Hot water, heating, lighting, laundry — costs that run year-round regardless of occupancy. Solar panels can offset a meaningful proportion of that consumption, and when paired with battery storage, those savings extend into the evenings, when guest demand is highest. A solar-powered property is also an increasingly attractive selling point for eco-conscious guests on platforms like Airbnb, Sykes Cottages, and Hoseasons.

04.

Many properties across the Lake District are older stone-built homes, converted farmhouses, and traditional cottages. We have extensive experience designing and installing solar systems on this type of property — including roofs with slate tiles, multiple aspects, and partial shading from surrounding trees or fells. Modern optimiser and microinverter systems handle these challenges significantly better than older string inverter technology.

Areas We Cover Across the Lake District

We install solar panels throughout the Lake District National Park and surrounding areas. Our main service towns include:

Ambleside

A hub for the central Lakes, with a high concentration of older residential properties and holiday accommodation. We cover Ambleside and the surrounding villages, including Grasmere, Elterwater, and Skelwith Bridge.

Keswick

One of the Lake District’s most visited towns, with a mix of residential homes, guest houses, and holiday lets across the Derwentwater area. We cover Keswick and the surrounding villages, including Braithwaite, Portinscale, and Threlkeld.

Windermere

The largest town in the Lake District, with a significant concentration of larger residential properties and holiday accommodation around England’s biggest lake. We cover Windermere, Bowness-on-Windermere, and the surrounding areas.

Coniston

A quieter part of the Lakes with a mix of residential and holiday properties. We cover Coniston and the surrounding Furness Fells area.

Grasmere

A small, popular village with a high proportion of holiday accommodation in the heart of the central Lakes. We cover Grasmere and the wider central Lakes area.

If your property isn’t listed above, get in touch — we cover the Lake District widely and are happy to discuss your location.

Solar Panel Systems We Install Across the Lake District

We work with a range of solar panel and inverter brands, and we’ll always recommend what’s right for your specific property. For Lake District buildings — which often have older roofs, complex layouts, or partial shading — getting the system design right from the start matters.

A market-leading inverter system using individual panel optimisers to maximise output from each panel independently. Particularly effective on properties with partial shading, multiple roof aspects, or complex layouts — all common across the Lake District.

A microinverter-based system where each panel has its own inverter, giving panel-level monitoring and strong performance on challenging roofs. One of the most reliable systems on the market with an industry-leading warranty — well-suited to holiday let owners who want minimal maintenance.

A strong all-round option that pairs well with GivEnergy battery storage for properties wanting a fully integrated solar and storage system with app-based monitoring.

We also work with other panel and inverter brands, depending on the specifics of your installation. We’ll talk through the options and explain our recommendation when you get in touch.

FAQs | Solar Panel Installation
in the Lake District

Do you install solar panels throughout the Lake District?

Yes. We cover the Lake District National Park and surrounding areas, including Ambleside, Keswick, Windermere, Coniston, Grasmere, and many smaller villages and rural properties throughout the region. If you’re unsure whether we cover your area, get in touch, and we’ll confirm.

Are solar panels suitable for older Lake District properties?

Most older properties in the Lake District are suitable for solar panels, though the approach may differ from a modern new build. Stone-built properties, slate roofs, and complex roof geometries all require careful system design. We conduct a thorough site assessment before making any recommendations, so you’ll know exactly what’s involved before committing.

How much do solar panels cost in the Lake District?

A typical home solar panel installation costs between £5,000–£8,000 depending on system size, brand, and roof complexity. Adding battery storage increases costs but also significantly increases returns. We provide free, no-obligation quotes tailored to your property.

Should I combine solar with battery storage?

For many Lake District properties — particularly holiday lets with variable occupancy — combining solar with battery storage significantly increases how much of your own generation you use. Solar produces most energy during the day; a battery stores what you don’t use so you can draw on it in the evening. We install both and can design a combined system in a single installation.

What is the Smart Export Guarantee?

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is a government scheme requiring licensed energy suppliers to pay you for surplus electricity your solar panels export to the grid. To be eligible, your installation must be carried out by an MCS-accredited installer. We handle MCS registration as part of every installation.

Are your installations MCS accredited?

Yes. All of our solar panel installations across the Lake District are MCS accredited, meeting the Microgeneration Certification Scheme standards. This is required to access the SEG and ensures every installation meets the highest safety and quality requirements.

Another five star review from us. Mark and his team have just installed a solar/battery system for us, along with an EV charger and new consumer unit (replacing an ancient relic), and a few other bits of remedial domestic work. The process from initial enquiry through to completion was fast, efficient and helpful. The engineers are all skilled, highly competent and were very respectful of our home, leaving everything clean and tidy. We are very happy customers and would wholeheartedly recommend Thomson Electrical & Energy Solutions to everyone.

We first contacted Mark on 20th April 2026, and within just two days he visited our home to discuss the options available for installing solar panels. After talking through our requirements, we decided to go ahead with six solar panels, a 5kW inverter, an EcoFlow system with a 10kW battery, and a new consumer unit. Mark estimated that the installation could take place during the first week of July, subject to the DNO application being approved. True to his word, the team arrived as planned, on time and on the agreed date. Mark was fantastic to deal with throughout the whole process — professional, knowledgeable and reliable. The installers, Aron and Stuart, were also first class. They worked efficiently, were very professional, and did an excellent job. Since the installation, we have been able to generate our own electricity and have effectively been off-grid, which has been fantastic. We would highly recommend Mark, Aron and Stuart to anyone considering solar panels or a battery storage system. Excellent service from start to finish!
